Year 8 Curriculum - Food

In Food and Nutrition in Year 8, students will focus on developing their knowledge and skills in both pastry making and the preparation and cooking of protein foods of both animal and plant origin. They will cook a range of dishes and develop skills including, accurate knife skills, handelling high risk foods such as raw meat safely, following multi-dish recipes effectively, creating reduced sauces and shortcrust pastry/biscuit making. Students will study healthy eating and diet-related disease, nutrition including the importance of protein in the diet, food provenance and seasonality.

Students will consider food hygiene and safety and will carry out a range of research and analysis, and investigation tasks. They will also have the oppourtunity to design, prepare and cook a meal of their own inspired by an international cuisine as part of the 'world cuisine' project.
