A Level Politics

Politics is everywhere and it is everything – from the monumental (how much your university fees will cost, our country going into lockdown in March 2020) to the more mundane (there is a law that prohibits MPs from wearing armour inside the Houses of Parliament!). As well as exploring the formal systems of administration for example our constitution and the 3 branches of government; legislature, executive and judiciary – we will analyse the political discourse that changes our lives. We will evaluate our democratic processes, our political parties, the pressure groups that persuade decision-making and our role as citizens in a representative democracy.

We aim to create the very best thinkers, analysts and communicators. The aim of the Politics curriculum is to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to be able to understand the ever-changing world around you and to be able to communicate your analysis of current events. We want you to be able to navigate the best course for yourselves through an understanding of power and influence in the 21st century and to appreciate how decisions are made that affect your lives. Our curriculum at SPG goes far beyond what is taught in lessons, for whilst we want you to achieve the very best examination results possible, we believe our curriculum goes beyond what is examinable. Cultural capital is developed in the Politics department by engaging with the news and having opportunities to take part in Q&A sessions with influential figures such as local councillors and MPs. You will be instructed to consume high quality information by taking part in a range of activities such as listening to university level lectures and reading articles from leading political commentators. You will be constantly challenged to think independently when engaging in debates in class. Manners, respect and tolerance are always exhibited in Politics lessons which allows you to express yourselves in a confident manner.

Politics is ever evolving with the scope of modern society, it is dynamic and exciting. It’s how we live.

We follow an AQA Specification. You will be assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year of study.
