BTEC Applied Science

General Course Description

The course is equivalent to 1 A level.

You will study fundamental concepts in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.  You will study units which are designed to develop practical laboratory skills across all three disciplines.

Biology

including cell biology and microscopy which will help you to understand tissue structure and different physiological systems of the human body.

Physics

including different types of waves and how they are used in varying forms of communication.  You will also study electrical circuits and how different types of circuits are used in different industrial contexts.

Chemistry

including the study of atomic structure and bonding and how these influence a substance's properties and why they might be chosen for different industrial settings.  There is an emphasis on different chemistry practical techniques used in different aspects of science e.g. forensic science, food science and biochemical fuel analysis.

Mathematics

Mathematical skills for science looking at statistical tests used including standard deviation, t test and the chi-squared test.

It is comprised of four units studied over 2 years.  Unit 1 is assessed entirely by an examination at the end of Year 12.  Unit 3 is a practical and written exam which is completed in school.  Unit 2 and the optional unit are assessed entirely through assignments and written tasks which are assessed by your teachers.
